OK so, we'd been dating for almost a month and it was something like 2-3 dates a week. We were getting along really well and then he tells me that his ex has been in contact and he doesnt want to mess me about so we should cool it until he knows how he feels about her. I chose to remain totally calm, thanked him for tellin me, then wished him all the best. ...Its the day after and all i can think about is how to get back with him..

Sorry MissG...but you got played. He was just using you to make his Ex G/F jealous. Unfortunately..it happened to you... But I see that happen all the time. Better luck with the next guy. But It's good to hear that you where an adult about it and handled it properly. Props to you for doing that.
if he had the respect to be honest with you... let him go.. this will happen over and over if you ever get him back anyway.

You have done the right thing. He was honest with you about his feelings. Go out and have fun. Maybe he will come back to you, if you still want him and if you are still available.
Continue on the high ground. Right now, at best, you are his second choice. Don't settle.

You should have enough self confidence and intelligence to realize that he wants someone who probably dumped him over the same type of situation you are in with him now. He just wants to keep you waiting in the wing as a backup. No female deserves that unless she is willing to accept that type of scenario and willing to settle for second best.

Move on from it, he has no idea what he wants and sounds like she just wanted him back once she saw someone else take an interest in him. They both sound like losers and deserve each other. Thankfully it happened only very early in the relationship for you. Take the experience with you and find something better.
whats worse, to find out his sleeping with his ex while going out with u or have him tell u he doesnt want to mess u up,he still loves his ex,forget him and move on,u will be doing yo self good,by the way he wasnt yet over his ex.

I know exactly how you feel because the same thing happened to me two years ago. You are better off without him because he is showing you how he deals with problems, which seems to be making sure that there is a wayout or a back up if things go wrong. Because of his lack of committment, you would never fully trust him and you would always wonder if you are good enough for him. Believe you me girl you don't need that kind of drama in your life and a good partner would never play with you or your emotions like that. I hope you will eventually meet a nice guy that will cherish you for the person you are.
